Walking into the sun

A Noordhoek sunset…

Noordhoek is a suburb in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. This suburb is one of those where you will find fancy folk, folk who ride horses on the beach, live in closed lush estates and put up signs telling you to be careful of the endangered frogs (I think there might be a joke there about why the frog crossed the road). This is not why we were here on this day, we were here for the long, sandy beach.

We had never been to Noordhoek, even though it is only about 25km (about 15 miles) from where we lived. I had been living in Cape Town since 2009 (when I came to study at one of the universities here). I did not have a car until 2014, but I only started exploring the city in 2018 when I bought my first DSLR camera (Nikon D3400 double lens). Having a camera made me want to explore the city, and having a car meant we could travel anywhere on a whim and curiosity.

Since I was living with my brother and he was my very first model, the person I practiced my photos with. I was incredibly proud of this photo, given I had only had my camera for 8 months at this point. The sand and the sun were so level here, you could barely see the sea. It really looked like we were close to the sun.

The walk is longer than you would think, the flatness and levelness of the sand makes it seem like the ocean’s edge is just here. I managed to catch a gorgeous moment of appreciation from my friend (who met us there).

In the end, it was a soul-filling experience, made even better by this visiting seal. It came out of the sea just to see the last glows of the sun (before someone’s dogs chased it back to the ocean):
